Behind the Design with Builder, Tyler O’Brien
What was your vision when purchasing this lot?
I wanted to design a home that would take advantage of the lake views but also give privacy from the surrounding residences. I also purchased the lot next door that will be available for future buyer to have more space.
What was your inspiration/thinking behind the design for the home?
I walked every square inch of the lot and even took a ladder out to see how much of the views we could take in. I knew the best spots for the lake views in the home on the lot and had the architect place the main living areas in exact spots on the lot so that we could see the million-dollar lakeview. I wanted to bring the water views indoors by creating a space that was light, bright and calming. I used a lot of lighter shades of whites, blues, grays.
Most challenging? Most rewarding?
Most challenging part was the slab size. Not a flat lot and it took 5 weeks to build the slab since we had a 2 pour deep beam. Always rewarding seeing the final product and seeing my initial vision when I first walked the lot become a reality and soon a place to call home for someone.
What was your favorite stage of building this house?
The day we install lighting is always my favorite! I love to go back in the evening and see them shine.
Tell me more about the process you went through when selecting the interior design.
Countless hours looking at Pinterest, Houzz, Instagram, all the while trying to create a new style and look for this home. Then comes the madness in my design room of pulling tiles, paint strip cards, countertop samples, wallpaper pieces, etc. I start pairing everything together room by room and then putting it together as a whole to see the final product. I need to always replenish my post it notes after my interior design selections 😀 I usually let all the selections sit on my table for a good week so I can continually look at it and make sure it is what I visualized for each room. If not, I go back to the drawing board and revise! Each home I build I try to bring something unique and better than the previous home. I want a varied portfolio of homes with cohesiveness but also individuality.
What are some of your favorite elements within the home?
I could talk about my favorite elements and inspiration all day 😀
If I had to narrow it down I would agree the lighting within the house and the Master Bathroom/Closet. The foyer and island lights are some of my favorite lights in the house. The foyer lights by Visual Comfort sparkle at night and make such a statement when someone walks through the doors. The aged brass pendant lights were the perfect pop in the kitchen. Everyone loves to give their kitchen some oomph so I used Benjamin Moore Narragansett Green as the island color. With so much natural light coming in, this deep color was a great compliment to the island truck bed flooring countertop. The rest of the cabinets in the kitchen are Sherwin Williams Pure White with a New Carrera quartz to create the ultimate balance in the kitchen.
The Master Bathroom is another one of my favorites. The cabinet color is Sherwin Williams Tempe Star. I love using blues in every shade and this deep teal color is the perfect hue that coordinates with the chrome fixtures, white tile shower walls, gray patterned cement shower floor, and New Carrera quartz countertops. The master closet is every woman’s dream come true. Custom shelving, seasonal rods, built in dresser, and island with walnut top with oversized cubbies to store purses, boots, or linens. Closet has a window to bring in the natural light and beautiful chandelier in the center. I don’t have my lucky lady yet, but when I do I will know how to design her the perfect space!
